Here's another floppy disk visualization. This is IBM's "Adventures in Math" - no crazy copy protection, but it's another single-sided floppy imaged on both sides.

The unformatted side again shows a faint echo of the data on the formatted side. I think that's super neat.

Heyo, I'm new to Wafrn and a former Cohost user. I love retro computers and I may blog about it from time to time.

Why Wafrn? Most fedi stuff is too "fast" for my tastes. Even the Mastodon instance I'm signed onto has a 500 character limit, but I'm used to writing in-depth posts about my adventures with old devices or retro computers or whatever.

I may get the ball rolling by posting some of my older and newer write-ups on here, and test to see how I like this platform. I hope to meet new friends and stuff.

Here's an old photo I took of my 2004 laptop running NetBSD (Omoikane: 256 MB of RAM, no SSE2 instructions, etc).

                  See ya around.

(EDIT: just noticed the photo isn't showing up for some Mastodon users, I may have to take a different approach. Here's a similar photo of my laptop from my Neocities: https://jetsetruri.neocities.org/blog/2024-06-24_omoikane-001.jpg )

These last days I've actually implemented the things I wanted to do since a while in my 6502 debugger, and it now counts cycles with page-crossing penalties, resolves y-indirect "($nn), y" memory accesses, warns me when a function returns with a stack imbalance.

It can now also exclude files or segments from the symbol-resolving, which is good when your projects have nine opponents sharing the same segment at different times.

This was my first hardware release for the SAM, with the soundcard adding multichannel digital sound, with surround sound outputs. A stereo sampler module followed, and oh so much vital software support!

Now, with initial pre-orders almost fully shipped out, orders are fully open for the latest edition of this fantastic sonic interface! So grab yourself a new Quazar Surround soundcard bundle at:

Curious to hear what it can do - there's a few tracks on the audio CD with issue 11 of SAM Revival magazine - see the quick shop link above to grab that issue!

3dfx Voodoo 5 now works with ReactOS!

Today is a good day for retrocomputing fans as they can now use ReactOS with the old 3dfx Voodoo 5 graphics card that was powerful at its time. Congratulations!

ReactOS is an “open-source Windows” operating system that provides support for most Windows applications that support Windows XP using the NT 5.2 compatibility layer. Games can now run with ReactOS on computers that use the 3dfx Voodoo 5 graphics card.

You can now run such games with the old binary drivers for the Voodoo 5 “VSA-100” that are built for Windows. This graphics card is compatible with ReactOS, because the compatibility layer works very well with it. However, further patches may be required to further improve the retro gaming experience.

If you want full performance out of your Voodoo 5 during your gaming sessions, you must install MesaFX/WickedGL.

I put it into Slot 7, made sure it was seated, then switched on the computer. There was a weird crackle, a puff of sweet-smelling smoke escaped from the card, and the computer shut down.

                                              @ry @kalleboo Ooooh, Think Pascal.

Back in … 1989? a club colleague introduced me to the local uni’s computer lab, filled with Mac II. Base config, 13" color screen with 640x480 in 256 colors, with Hypercard and Think Pascal on it. And some word processor.

Coming from the Atari ST, the Mac II wasn’t much faster than what I had, and the GUI was theoretically similar.

But ThinkPascal felt sooo much more advanced due to the tight integration of its source level debugger into the IDE. On the ST, debuggers weren’t integrated yet into the UI, and were cumbersome to use.

So Think Pascals step-by-step debugger and variable inspection in windows were mind-blowing for me ("how to they do this in supervisor mode, and yet have full access to high-level OS/grafport/window calls?" -- little did I know how hacky System 6/7 were).

                                              These memories.

In the late 1980s our small game dev team developed 2 Amiga music editors: SIDmon and Digital Mugician, both featuring synth sounds and sampled sounds.

Mugician was published by the British Thalamus game publisher in 1990, and was used for several Amiga games, including our own.

This is our composer Ramon Braumuller's 4-channel Mugician intro.
